Hi, I’m Jessica Burgess—The STEM Translator—a scientist by education, a communicator by passion, and a bridge-builder between complex science and the people who deserve to understand it.

For more than 15 years, I’ve dedicated my career to one mission:
Making Science Make Sense

My path into STEM communication is a little unconventional, but it’s what shaped my ability to explain science topics to anyone.

Before ever stepping into a classroom, I spent years working as a zookeeper and animal trainer, caring for animals and training behaviors that supported enrichment and welfare. My favorite part of that work was giving lively keeper chats, where I translated animal behavior, physiology, and conservation into stories families could understand and get excited about. That was my first glimpse into the power of accessible science—and I was hooked.

From there, I shifted into middle school science teaching, bringing that same sense of wonder and clarity into the classroom. I learned how to break down big ideas, build confidence, and make even the most intimidating concepts feel approachable and fun. Those moments when a student’s eyes lit up—when something finally clicked—became the fuel for my career.

After teaching, I moved into informal science education at one of the nation’s largest science museums, where I designed hands-on, accessible STEM programs for diverse audiences. I helped people of all ages explore everything from engineering to energy systems, always centering curiosity, clarity, and engagement.

Eventually, my journey led me to a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory, where I spent years managing STEM partnerships and outreach. I worked with world-class researchers and trained them to communicate their discoveries to the public, educators, policymakers, and students in ways that were clear, accurate, and compelling. While working at the lab, I also earned my Master of Education in Science Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC)—an experience that deepened my understanding of how people learn science and how to communicate it effectively.

Across zoos, classrooms, museums, and national laboratories, one truth stayed the same:
Brilliant ideas don’t matter if people can’t understand them

That’s why I created STEM Translation Co.

To support scientists, educators, organizations, and professionals in sharing their STEM stories with clarity and impact.

Today, I combine my storytelling experience, my education expertise, and my deep knowledge of public engagement to help others communicate science with confidence. Whether I’m giving a keynote talk, coaching a researcher, or leading a customized workshop, my goal is always the same:
To make science engaging, accurate, and accessible to everyone—no matter their background or experience.

Science shapes everyday life. Understanding it shouldn’t feel out of reach. And communicating it shouldn’t be a barrier.
